/about

EOF means end of file. Not end of access.

A practical archival-computing project focused on preserving access to data stored on aging, obsolete and awkward magnetic and optical media.

THE PROJECT

Preserving the path back to the bytes

We document what a medium is, which drives can read it, what interfaces and adapters are required, how generation compatibility works, and how to extract data without depending on disappearing institutional knowledge.

The scope includes reel and cartridge tape, floppy disks, magnetic removable disks, CD/DVD and specialist optical or magneto-optical systems.

The boundary is the recording medium

EOF Labs does not cover USB flash drives, CompactFlash, SD cards, SSDs, NVMe or other semiconductor flash storage. HDD-based magnetic RDX cartridges are in scope; SSD-based RDX cartridges are not.

What we do

Build and maintain a multi-format recovery bench, test legacy hardware, identify unknown media, document compatibility, preserve recovery procedures and produce technical notes for magnetic and optical formats that are getting harder to support.

What we are not

EOF Labs is not a generic cloud-backup product, a modern flash-recovery service or a data-destruction service. The focus is understanding physical magnetic and optical media well enough to recover what is still there.

Have old media you cannot identify or read?

Send the cartridge or disc type, product codes or labels, and clear photographs of the front and back.
